scrAPES Week 3
Topic: Cut Soot to Stave Off Sea Level Rise
By: David Biello of the Scientific American
Date: August 14th, 2013
Summary
New research released from the Nature Climate Change suggests that the removal of soot and other greenhouse gases could be the answer to more time in addressing the rising carbon emission crisis. A 20% decrease in sea levels and a 1 degree celsius lowering of global temperature are both the effects of bringing gases such as methane, ozone, carbon dioxide, and HFC out of the atmosphere and into our control. With rising temperatures and sea levels threatening the world, this chance for climate change could help us devise an answer to our environmental problems.
Reflection
I believe that abstaining from fossil fuels and less industry will help keep soot and greenhouse gases out of the air, and that the changes mentioned above are very critical to our world's survival, considering how badly we've been treating the environment. If more awareness is passed of these benefits and changes, I think that we may have a chance to bring these issues to the attention of corporations and government officials all over the world.
