Topic: $2,500 Reward Offered after Critically Endangered Red Wolf Killed in North Carolina
By: John R. Platt of the Scientific American
Date: February 19, 2013
Summary
The critically endangered red wolf has been in the process of recovery ever since the Red Wolf Recovery Program urged the importance of sustaining the red wolf population in North Carolina. The red wolf's extinction was due to the rash decision to eliminate the wolf population in an attempt to protect livestock in the 1960s. A new threat, however, surfaced when a red wolf was shot in January 18th as the 10th case of red wolf killings in the past 14 months. A $2,500 reward has been issued pertaining to anyone that can provide useful information on the shootings. If the suspect is caught, they may face a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
Reflection
This article showed me the importance of the Endangered Species Act and the repercussions that could surface if the act were to be violated. In order to prevent any future cases, scientists and field workers should set up surveillance devices, such as microphones and cameras that can be placed on trees and in bushes to aid in both gathering information, and for identifying culprits. Hopefully in the future illegal poaching and hunting won't be a problem in both the U.S. and other countries that are affected by illegal practices.
